Growing Communities Through Plants

In 2021, Green Shelter organised its first Plant Fair in Swindon. Since then, our Plant Fairs have grown into welcoming community events held in towns and cities across the UK, including London, Manchester, Swindon, Luton and Stevenage.

Our Plant Fairs bring together people from different communities who share a love of plants and growing. Home growers, plant enthusiasts and local sellers have the opportunity to book stalls to swap, share and sell plants, while connecting with others and sharing their knowledge and experiences.

But our Plant Fairs are about much more than plants.

Over the years, our events have been filled with children’s activities, food, music, laughter and friendship, creating enjoyable spaces where families, neighbours and communities can come together. The success of these events has shown us the wonderful potential of plants as a way of bringing people closer.

A New Vision for Plant Fairs

Building on this experience, Green Shelter is now looking forward to developing our Plant Fairs and Plant Swap events in a new and more inclusive format.

We are planning events in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Kent, Stevenage, Luton and Swindon, with the ambition of making each event a celebration of local communities and cultures.

Our team is working hard to build a strong network of local charities, community groups from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, places of worship, universities, colleges and local councils. By bringing these organisations together as partners, we hope to create events where everyone feels welcome and has an opportunity to participate.

Connecting Communities

At the heart of our new Plant Fair vision is one simple idea:

Plants can connect people.

Our main theme will be “Connecting Communities” – creating spaces where people from different backgrounds, cultures and generations can meet, share, learn and celebrate together.

We want every participating organisation to feel valued and have an equal sense of ownership and recognition. Rather than being separate groups attending the same event, we hope to create a genuine shared community experience, where everyone has a role to play.

Inspiring the Next Generation

A particularly important part of our new approach will be our Junior Ambassadors Programme.

Each participating organisation will have the opportunity to involve a team of young people as Junior Ambassadors. This will give our younger generation a meaningful role in the events and an opportunity to work alongside young people from other communities.

Through this initiative, we hope to encourage young people to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills, while helping them build friendships and connections across different communities.

Most importantly, we want to inspire young people to develop a lasting relationship with nature, plants and the environment.

Growing Together

Green Shelter believes that a greener future is also a more connected future.

Through our Plant Fairs, we hope to create joyful spaces where plants bring people together, communities learn from one another, and young people become part of building a greener tomorrow.

Our vision is simple: to grow together, connect communities and nurture a greener future for everyone.
