Our community Seed Banks make it easy for people to donate surplus seeds or collect seeds to grow at home – free of charge.
About the project
Green Shelter Society UK is working with libraries to place seed-drawer cabinets in towns across the UK. Each cabinet provides a convenient local place where people can share and collect seeds.
Our goal is to establish Seed Banks in 100 towns by 2027 and expand the network to 500 towns within five years.
How it works
- Donate: Place suitable surplus seeds in a labelled packet and leave them in the correct drawer.
- Collect: Choose seeds you would like to grow and take only what you need.
- Grow: Follow the growing guidance and enjoy raising your plants.
- Share: Save suitable seeds or donate your surplus for someone else to grow.

FAQ
Is it free to collect seeds?
Yes. Seeds are shared free of charge to make growing more accessible. Please take only what you need so that others can benefit too.
Do I need to donate seeds before collecting any?
No. You are welcome to collect seeds even if you have none to donate. If you have suitable surplus seeds in the future, we encourage you to share them with the community.
What seeds can I donate?
We welcome properly packaged, clearly labelled seeds that are dry, undamaged and suitable for growing in the UK. Please check the guidance displayed at your local Seed Bank before donating.
How should I label donated seeds?
Please include the plant name and variety, the year the seeds were packed or collected, and any useful growing information. Clearly labelled packets help other growers use the seeds successfully.
Can my library or organisation host a Seed Bank?
We would love to hear from libraries and community organisations interested in joining the network. Contact Green Shelter Society UK to discuss becoming a Seed Bank partner.
Are there seeds I should not donate?
Please do not donate damp, mouldy, damaged, treated or unidentified seeds. Invasive, restricted or potentially harmful species must not be donated. Each Seed Bank may provide additional local guidance.
How many seed packets can I take?
Please take a reasonable amount for your own growing needs. Local limits may apply depending on availability and demand.
Will every donated seed grow?
We cannot guarantee germination because seeds vary in age, condition and storage history. We encourage everyone to follow the packet instructions and share their growing experience with us.
Where can I find my nearest Seed Bank?
Use our location finder to view participating libraries, addresses and opening hours. New locations will be added as the network grows.
How can I support the project?
You can donate suitable seeds, volunteer locally, introduce us to a potential partner or support the wider work of Green Shelter Society UK.
