At Green Shelter Society UK, our Seed Swap events are simple in concept but powerful in impact: bring seeds, share what you can, and leave with something new to grow. What began as a small local initiative has now expanded across multiple towns and cities, creating welcoming, practical spaces where communities connect through gardening, food growing, and sustainability.
What Is a Seed Swap?
A Seed Swap is a free, community-led event where people:
- Exchange vegetable, herb, and flower seeds
-
Share surplus seedlings and plants
-
Learn about growing food at home
-
Connect communities with each other interested in sustainability
-
Access guidance on seasonal planting
- Promote awareness for the environment and health benefit of gardening
For those without seeds to swap, we always ensure there are shared donations available so everyone can take part.
If you would like to host a seed swap in your area, please contact us!
Our vision
Short-term goal:
To deliver Seed Swap and Plant Swap events in 100 towns and cities across the UK, building a strong national foundation for community-led food growing and sustainability.
Long-term goal:
To expand this network to 500 towns and cities within the next five years, creating a nationwide movement rooted in local action and collaboration.
How We Plan to Achieve This
To ensure sustainable growth and strong local partnerships, we have divided the UK into five regional zones.
Each zone is overseen by a dedicated trustee who is responsible for:
-
Developing local volunteer networks
-
Building partnerships with community groups and organisations
-
Supporting event coordination and delivery
-
Ensuring activities reflect local needs
This model allows us to grow strategically while keeping our work community-led, locally relevant, and scalable.
