Dr Sarfraz Awan is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in total hip and knee replacement surgery. He was born and raised in a mountain village in northern Pakistan and studied medicine at Khyber Medical College, Peshawar. After completing his medical education, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue advanced surgical training.
Dr Awan obtained his Fellowship in Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and has served at Lister Hospital, Stevenage, for more than 30 years. Throughout his distinguished career, he has remained committed to delivering high-quality orthopaedic care and improving the lives of his patients.
Alongside his medical profession, Dr Awan has played an active role in community development as Chairman of the Stevenage Muslim Community Centre. Since the establishment of the Centre, he has been closely involved in its growth and development, contributing significantly to its construction and long-term success. Beyond helping to facilitate activities at the mosque, he has played an important role in bringing people together by fostering an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere within the community. He has worked tirelessly to build bridges between different faiths, cultures, and communities by organising and supporting a wide range of community events and initiatives that encourage dialogue, understanding, and cooperation. Through these efforts, Dr Awan has helped strengthen community cohesion and promote mutual respect among people from diverse backgrounds.
Outside of medicine and community service, Dr Awan is a passionate gardener. He is currently focused on developing and enhancing the gardens at the Stevenage Muslim Community Centre, helping to create a welcoming, attractive, and peaceful environment for visitors and residents alike.
Following the devastating 2005 earthquake in Pakistan-the deadliest natural disaster in the country’s history, which claimed more than 80,000 lives and left around three million people homeless-Dr Awan, together with his friend Syed Shah, established a large school in his native village. The school now provides high-quality education to more than 500 students and operates on a not-for-profit basis, creating opportunities for future generations and contributing to the long-term development of the local community.
Dr Awan’s lifelong commitment to healthcare, education, community development, and environmental improvement reflects his enduring dedication to serving others and making a positive difference both locally and internationally. Through his professional achievements, charitable work, and community leadership, he continues to inspire others through a life devoted to service, compassion, and the wellbeing of future generations.
